The Southport in navy is a knee-length wool coat designed to fit the way a coat should: room for layers, adjustable cuffs so you never need a tailor, a magnetic and horn-snap closure that holds in wind. Navy is rich and deep, the kind of color that reads as a neutral while being anything but. Made in Chicago from 100% RWS-certified wool grown on regenerative American farms.

The Checkroom specializes in timeless women’s wool coats made entirely in the United States. Our coats are crafted from 100% RWS certified domestic Shaniko wool which is woven at American Woolen in Connecticut, and ultimately cut and sewn in Chicago.

This coat has certainly checked all of the boxes for me from the American raised sheep to the wool fabric woven in Connecticut to the manufacturer in Chicago. The wool is absolutely gorgeous. Soft warm ready for my New England winters. One detail I noticed was the amount of wool within this coat from the generous cuff and collar to the inside in the front where the wool meets the beautiful lining. Beautifully designed and executed. Also included was a beautiful garment bag and hanger, which I was not expecting.
My new Southport coat in camel logged multiple miles on the streets of Chicago this weekend and was a fan favorite of my daughters:)

My new Southport coat kept me warm on the coldest days of the recent subzero blast in Northern Ohio (-2 degrees/-20 wind-chill). I had a quilted liner from another coat ready to layer under it, but never needed it. Chicago-level warm indeed!
I’d add extra stars if I could. After trying on dozens of coats over the last 2 years that were not quite right, including some really expensive ones, this one is perfect! It is properly cut and proportioned— no huge shoulders on the XL, but still room for a blazer underneath, and the sleeves are set properly so you can lift your arms without the whole coat lifting up. The wool is so soft without a hint of itch, and even the lining is a high quality fabric. Overall, the craftsmanship is impeccable. Worth every penny, and so happy to find a coat made in USA!!
The burgundy version of this is even more classy, elegant, and dreamy than the camel one I bought a few years ago. Although the model is tall, this seems to look equally good on a petite frame. The drape is soft and warm. I feel like Liz is an absolute wizard who somehow seems to improve on every coat every season.

Absolutely in love with my coat! The fabric feels heirloom quality—thick but not too thick and the navy color is beautiful and vibrant. I had so many questions for Liz and she was an absolute gem. If you’re a petite lady, she does have petite patterns available as well. Add to cart, you will not regret it!

I've been eyeing this coat for a year and am so happy to have it. It's beautifully crafted with a dramatic and cozy collar. Looks tailored with or without the belt. Love the magnet closure. And for someone 5'10" with long arms to match, the adjustable sleeve cuffs are really a welcome change. I'm sort of looking forward to Chicago winter just so I can wear it.

The entire process of buying my coat - Southport XXS in navy blue - was very personal. I was concerned about what size to order since I normally wear petite sizes. Liz felt that in her experience, the XXS would work, and suggested that I could try an XS to see the coat and understand the fit and exchange for an XXS if that was clearly a better option. She was absolutely right. Furthermore, I thought I wanted my coat in burgundy, but liked the navy blue XS so well, I changed my mind.
Liz is very easy to work with because she is not just selling a coat - she is offering a very personal service of choosing the right coat for your style and satisfaction. And I am very satisfied, indeed! I wore the coat the very day I received it!
