Our coats are designed to fit true to size with room for a sweater of medium thickness. If you regularly wear very thick sweaters or blazers underneath, consider sizing up. The XXS is engineered for women 5'1"–5'4" at a size 00/0. Most styles suit women 5'4"–6'. Individual coat lengths by size are on the full fit guide.

How to Measure

Standard Measurements

Bust
Wrap the tape around the fullest part of your chest, parallel to the floor. Keep it snug but not tight. Measure over a light layer.

Waist
Measure around your natural waist — the narrowest part of your torso, usually an inch or two above your belly button.

Hip
Measure around the fullest part of your hips and seat, usually 7–9 inches below your natural waist, parallel to the floor.

Shoulder — Across the Back
With your arms relaxed at your sides, measure straight across the back from the edge of one shoulder to the other — from shoulder tip to shoulder tip. This is the measurement most likely to determine your size if you are between two sizes. A coat that fits at the shoulder will fit everywhere else. Please note, shoulder across back measurements are very different from shoulder across front measurements.

Sleeve Length — CB Neck to Wrist

Stand with your arm relaxed at your side, elbow slightly bent.

Place the tape at the prominent bone at the center back of your neck — where your neck meets your shoulders.

Run it across the top of your shoulder, down the outside of your arm, to your wrist bone.

We measure sleeve length from CB neck — not the shoulder seam — so your measurement matches our chart directly.

Coat Length — CB Neck to Hem

Stand straight with feet together.

Place the tape at the same prominent bone at the center back of your neck.

Run it straight down your back to where you'd like the coat to fall.

Beautiful coat

I love this coat. It is the perfect coat if you want one that works with both casual and more formal outfits. Because it has a drop shoulder, I could layer thicker sweaters underneath without issue. All of Liz's long coats look lovely, but IMO this one seems the most versatile. If you are on the fence about it, definitely reach out to Liz. She was the most wonderful to work with and truly cares about her customers, going back and forth with me several times to get the coat just right. I could not thank her enough!

Worth every penny

I bought the Mag Mile in camel toward the end of last year. I am petite (about 5'1" and 105lbs) so I ordered an XXS. The coat still ended up being too large in some places for my frame, but Liz is truly the best and worked with me to get my measurements and had me snap some photos so that she could make another that would fit me right. The final result was seriously so lovely and worth the wait. I felt glamorous wearing it. Sadly I only had one day cold enough to wear it before spring hit but I can't wait to wear it when it gets cold again!

How long does it take to receive this overcoat?

The Checkroom's coats are made on demand in Chicago, and take approximately four weeks from order to delivery. Bu making our wool coats as they are ordered we are able to keep quality high and waste low. Check the size indicator when shopping as we do keep a small inventory of "in stock" coats.

Does this Black Wool Overcoat run true to size?

Our women's black wool overcoat is intentionally oversized with a relaxed A-line cut, so it will feel generous when you first put it on. That's the design, not a sizing issue. Order your usual size and don't size down to compensate for the silhouette. If you're deciding between the Mag Mile and one of our other black wool coats, the fit guide breaks down the differences.

What's the difference between the Mag Mile Overcoat and the Dearborn Trench Coat?

The Mag Mile Overcoat and Dearborn Trench Coat are both 100% wool coats, long in length, and fully lined. However the Mag Mile has a cleaner, mac coat silhouette whereas the Dearborn is a double-breasted trench with a notched lapel. Pick the Mag Mile for something more modern and minimal, the Dearborn for something more classic.

Should I belt an overcoat wear it open?

Either. The belt is optional, so you can cinch the waist for more shape or leave it open for a straighter, more relaxed line. The belt loops can also be snipped off if you know that you will never wear a belt.
