A Guide for Women Who Value Timelessness Craftsmanship
A wool coat is more than a wardrobe staple—it’s a long-term investment in warmth, style, and sustainability. At The Checkroom, we believe a great coat should last for years (even decades) with the right selection and care. Whether you’re shopping for your first wool coat or looking to maintain a beloved classic, here’s everything you need to know.
How to Choose the Right Wool Coat
1. Understand the Wool
Not all wool is created equal. These days when shopping for a coat that looks like a wool coat, you are more likely to find a synthetic material. Synthetic materials by their definition are - (a substance) made by chemical synthesis, especially to imitate a natural product (such as wool, cotton, or silk). For this reason, it's so crucial to look at the label on your clothes (which are required by law) to find out the actual composition of your coat so that you can weigh the pros and cons. We have written an entire post outlining wool blends here.
2. Pick a Classic Silhouette
Trends come and go, but timeless cuts endure. Consider:
-
Wrap Coats – Flattering and versatile. Wrap coats do a beautiful job keeping the wind out and warmth in and they are fitted close to the body.
-
Long Full Length Coats – Tailored for supreme warmth, longer coats are not only currently trending, but a classic staple for those who like to stay warm from head to toe.
-
A-Line or Swing Coats – Roomy and chic, perfect for layering. Swing coats and Aline coats are cut away from the body giving the wearer a chance to play with the silhouette of their outfit.
Choose a silhouette that fits your lifestyle.
3. Prioritize Fit & Comfort
A wool coat should feel like a warm hug, not a harness. Conversely, egregiously oversized coats will not keep you are warm and provide most manufactures with a shortcut to poor quality. Although trips to the tailor can fine tune the fit through the waist, hips, and sleeves, it is imperative that the fit of the coat begins at the shoulders. I well fitting coat should rest well on your natural armhole, giving you the best range of motion for your arms. Consider if you will be driving wearing your coat and how easy it will be to operate your vehicle comfortably.
4. Mind the Details
Well-made wool coats include:
-
Full Lining or partial lining for comfort and durability. At The Checkroom, we prefer a fully lined coat. That being said there are still many quality coats on the market with a partial lining through the shoulders only. A coat lining (while thin) still provides an extra layer or warmth, allows you to slip on your coat easily, and ultimately protects your coat from wear.
-
Pockets that are functional and cozy (yes, that matters!)
-
Buttons and belts that are secure and substantial
How to Care for Your Wool Coat
A wool coat is meant to be a great investment piece that can be worn for years to come. Give it the love it deserves by caring for it and wearing it often! Wool has natural anti bacterial and anti microbial properties so unlike synthetic fabrics it does not require numerous washings in order to smell fresh. Most manufacturers suggest only 1-2 trips to the dry cleaner in the span of one year. We have an entire post why you should dry clean your wool coat in the spring here.
1. Brush It Off
Use a soft garment brush to remove lint, dust, and surface dirt. A quick brush every few wears helps prevent buildup and keeps the fabric looking fresh.
2. Spot Clean When Possible
Spills happen. Use a clean cloth, lukewarm water, and a small amount of gentle wool soap to dab (never rub!) stains. Test on an inconspicuous area first. Read more about spot cleaning your wool coat here.
3. Hang It Right
Always hang your coat on a sturdy, wide-shouldered hanger. Avoid hooks, which can distort the shape. Give it space to breathe between wears.
4. Store It Smart
At the end of the season:
-
Clean it (even if it looks clean)
-
Store it in a garment bag on a wide suit hanger to keep the shoulders from stretching out.
-
Add a few cedar blocks or lavender sachets to deter moths
